Last Spring when we were on the farm up island our neighbor had goats which the girls (and I) quickly fell in love with! The girls decided in September when we bought the farm that they wanted to use some of their homeschool money towards buying goats! I was thrilled! After reading more on self-sufficeincy and homesteading I learned that goats are an AMAZING addition to a self-sufficient lifestyle! Curtis had goats growing up and had a less than pleasant experience with them (crapping all over the truck windshield etc), so he took some convincing. We chose Nubian-Boer Cross goats. We bought two does , one who we had bred with the Nubian Buck before we brought her here, so she is due April 9th. Nubians are excellent milk goats (also dual purpose) and the Boer is a meat breed which makes it easier for the kids to be sold if they are male. They are settling into their new barn and we are only letting the kids near them one at a time so they can slowly get used to us all! Ocean’s goat is the pregnant one, she is white, her name is Flower and Sunny (Sierra’s goat) is the tan colored one! Aren’t they cute?

Hey Kim! Some of the folks in our valley who have goats put out old car wrecks in the goats’ pen; keeps them amused! Sends property values plummeting and makes for interesting neighbour relations! Goats are seriously smart animals. Mine watched my mom for months and when she (the nanny) heard mom leave the house, but the door didn’t click shut, the nanny went inside while mom was out and chewed a hole in the back of the sofa! Have fun with yours!
